Women: Views on the Role of the Women during the 2020 Presidential Election, 2020-current

"Personally, I believe that it would be great to have a black women in office, because it can potentially influence others, while making a bold statement that assures people from around the world that the opposite race and sex should be given the same respect and opportunity as others."

Gilana (GiGi), 12

The powerful and influential role that women of color has taken during the 2020 Presidential Election was phenomenal and much appreciated by the women of color community. A community who always had to fight for their place in this world.

I spoke to 9 women of color of all ages, and asked them to share their thoughts on the powerful role of women, being the backbone of the 2020 election.

These were their responses.

"It's about time that we (women) are recognized and acknowledged for the contribution of strength we bring to support and even lead in various circles. As a black woman I am fully aware of the inner strength within out communities because of what I've witnessed throughout my life, watching women persevere through hard times and situations! Physical strength can demise over time but, inner strength continues to build as we conquer victories. By the strength of Christ Jesus we shall overcome and continue to step into arenas that society has kept us out of but now we are on the rise."

"Black women have been in the background for ages. I think it is an amazingly unique opportunity for blacks and black women to showcase our power as a leader. This is a big step in the right direction for the black community."

Monica, 49

"The role that black women played in this election does not surprise me because it's a familiar role. Historically when chaos happens black women step into whatever role is necessary to bring order to their lives or their families. It's why our culture relies on the strong, sure presence of black women in their lives. You can be sure when something is broken they act, they mobilize to fix it."

-Tracie, 48

"I was so excited to see a black woman as our new VP. This will open doors for women in new areas. I really admired Stacey Abrams, she successfully got young black voters (especially females) not only to register to vote but to actually vote to turn a red state blue. Can't wait to see all the great things we will do in the near future."

-Sarah, 33

"Black women have been the backbone for generations.... So there isn't any changes but a new level now, from slaves to Vice President, and everything in between"

-India, 30

"America's future is still very bland and uncertain...... This election showed that there are those who are tired and/or want things to get better.... This election revealed that there are also people who hold hate in their heart, that extends so far that they do not care what happens to brown, poor people, or anyone who is not rich....With Covid-19 that plays a huge part into the election itself. I never can understand why our leaders continue to debate about things that people actually need. The greedy and lack of human empathy is abhorrent.... America is a melting pot, it's diverse and needs to have people capable of putting differences aside and actually looking at reality for what it is and changing the problems that it's been facing for years. America's political leaders need to reflect it's citizens. Those seats need to have people in them who are culturally different, who are from different backgrounds, who are knowledgable and who are not afraid of change."

-Geraldnisha, 24

"It is fantastic what black women did in this election. They showed that strength is in numbers and that black women are needed in this country. Malcolm X once said 'The most neglected person in America is the black women'. The past 4 years they've been strangers in their own country but they shifted that and came together for each other. Now young girls such as me can look up to the women that shifted the election and see that black girl power is real and it matters."

"Obviously this year's election and election process was made much easier due to the pandemic, meaning that people put their ballots in from the comforts of their home. In 2020 We've had a lo of new voters who have been waiting to voice their opinions. People also have been staying home more meaning they have more time to get educated on politics. With people posting and speaking out on social media . People are more attentive when coming to choose what side they're on."
